SAFE Project - SAFE Campuses

A.R.H.E.

The Association of Recovery in Higher Education is the only association exclusively representing collegiate recovery programs and communities, the faculty and staff who support them, and the students who represent them.

Sober Housing at Universities

  • Substance-Free/Recovery Housing: a recovery house available on campus that offers substance-free activities for students recovering from drug or alcohol abuse.
    • Rutgers University, the state university of New Jersey, was the first to design this style of college housing.[1]
    • While living in this type of housing, students must attend at least two 12-step meetings a week and meet with recovery center counselors.[2]
    • New Jersey signed a law that requires all state colleges and universities in the state to offer sober housing if at least a quarter of the students live on campus.[3]

Association of Recovery Schools

[1]

Highlights

  • College programs have low relapse rates and high GPAs[4]
  • Students feel like they have a purpose helping their friends stay on track[5]
  • Students in CRPs have high retention and graduation rates
