When their families are dealing with family justice issues, children and youth are often shut out of decisions that affect their lives. They feel powerless. If they are involved, their participation is often not meaningful.  Children and youth routinely have opportunities to meaningfully participate in family justice processes that are deciding on their lives. They can express their own views and are being heard along the way. They have a say in whether and how they will make their views known
Children and youth are unsupported in making their views known. They do not know how, or feel unsafe expressing their true thoughts. Children and youth are supported in expressing their views by:
  • being informed about their right to participate meaningfully in decisions that affect them
  • having one or more trusted adults who can advocate for them
  • having supportive adults across all sectors they interact with
  • being able to participate in family justice processes that are clear and comfortable for them
  • having plans in place to deal with repercussions

Adults who are making decisions about children and youth whose families are experiencing family justice issues do not understand the importance of meaningful participation to the well-being of children and youth or how to support it in practice. Family members, service providers, legal professionals, judges and others are educated about how important participation is to the well-being of children and youth, and how to practice it,
