Return to  Opioid Top-Level Strategy Map or ZOOM MAP - Expand Steps to Minimize Opioid Use During Pregnancy or Pregnancy during Opioid Use

Background

Parents with substance use disorders often have ambivalence toward entering treatment. Offering the phone number of a local treatment facility to a parent with substance use disorder is unlikely to lead to treatment engagement. A systemic response that has been adapted by child welfare agencies and treatment programs is the integration of peers or recovery specialists into their service delivery models to address the complex needs of families. Peer specialists often have personal experience with substance use disorder or child welfare involvement. Recovery specialists are professionally trained in substance use disorder treatment and recovery. These experts can facilitate timely access to substance use assessment and treatment, foster engagement during and after completion of treatment, and support child welfare caseworkers and court professionals to better understand the treatment and recovery processes. [1]
