Examples of a Description for this Objective

As part of developing an effective ecosystem for recovery from dependency on opioids (or earlier stages of misuse), our community will work to strengthen the peer recovery and support groups and connect people who would benefit from those groups with the groups. As part of this objective, we will work to:

  • Increase the number and type of peer recovery support services and programs in different parts of our community to improve access to these groups.
  • Have an up-to-date directory of available resources with a growing amount of information on each group to help people find a group that is right for them.
  • Provide peer recovery groups with resources and tools that they can use to enhance their own effectiveness and support the recovery of their members (such as rTribe and the Addiction Resource Center).
  • Expand the use of Recovery Coaches and work to increase training and compensation of Recovery Coaches that can work alongside peer-based programs and other treatment and recovery options.
  • Engage community partners, including housing providers, in weaving together an ecosystem that supports recovery--using the Rizility.
  • Reduce stigma for people in peer recovery programs and for family members supporting recovering addicts.
  • Work to increase funding to enhance peer recovery support using Realty4Rehab and other fund-raising strategies.

Examples of a From-To Gap

Current State Desired State
While some people participate in peer recovery groups like Narcotics Anonymous, many people who would benefit from such a group either are not aware of the groups, or the groups don't meet at convenient times or locations. Many additional peer recovery support groups have been established in various locations (such as spaces provided by faith communities) and they are listed in a directory that makes it easier for people to find and attend.
Existing programs follow the 12-Step model, and some people are not interested in that approach. As a result, they don't participate in any peer support group. A variety of different types of support groups are now available, so people are more likely to find one that is a good fit for them.
People who would benefit from a group don't attend because they don't have transportation. A greater number of options for groups closer to where people live and coordinated car-pools help make sure people can regularly participate in groups that will help them.
Groups rarely take advantage of new technologies and research-based innovations. The groups use a variety of technologies and research-based approaches to improve the percent of people who remain in successful recovery.
