The Six Principles for Safe Storage of Prescription Drugs are as follows:

Measure: Patients should be able to keep medications with dosage instructions in the original containers with pharmacy labels and directions.
Monitor: Patients are able to monitor the time in between doses to avoid overdoses and evaluate driving abilities.
Manage: Medication that is managed in its original bottle and label provides the safety of prescription information for patient and caregivers to review. Medications should be easily transported in safe manner for travel.
Detect: Patients should be able to detect if their medications have been tampered with by a third party.
Deter: Prescription drugs need to be stored safely in a manner that deters third parties, especially children, from stealing medication.
Dispose: Safe disposal of unwanted or unused medications at a take-back program, pharmacy or anti-drug coalition event.
